Who We Help

Our primary target is refugees and migrant workers, but this website can be used by anybody working in Great Britain and cheated at work.

Refugees and Migrant Workers are particularly vulnerable and often exploited at work. Language difficulties, lack of recognition for their skills and qualifications, and ack of contacts make it hard find work. So it is hard to complain to employers when they do find work; and they don’t know what to expect from employers or what their rights are.

Often, any job is better than none; even if insecure, casual and poorly paid. Many migrant workers
are unable to claim Benefits if out of work: their visas allow them to work but they have “No
Recourse to Public Funds.” Even if they do complain, going to law, making a claim to a court, is not a
real possibility. And employers, of course, know this.

Some asylum seekers have the right to work and we represent them as well. We will also, advise people who ar working “illegally” and have not been paid even though they are “illegal”, they can make a claim in law for their outstanding pay. They make a legal claim for the outstanding pay and holiday pay they are owed.

Common problems the people we help face include:

  • Pay for only some of the hours they are expected to work.
  • Payslips that show 40 hours a week worked, when in practice, they work 50.
  • No holidays or breaks, let alone paid holidays.
  • Casual working – zero hour contracts – with no recognition of length of service even when
they have actually worked for months or years.
  • No written contracts or terms and conditions of work: or one way contracts that are written
in lawyer’s language, and which require them to agree to everything the employer says.
  • Agencies who hire and fire at will, at the employer’s request.
